dc.description.abstract | This paper describes the development of a novel mobile health (mHealth) educational intervention designed for first-time hearing aid users. We have previously developed and evaluated a series of educational multimedia videos, or reusable learning objects (RLOs), that have been shown to improve hearing aid knowledge and communication, handling skills, self-efficacy, and use in suboptimal users. However, the RLO-based intervention, branded C2Hear, was originally developed for a DVD-based platform, limiting opportunities for individualisation and interactivity. To address these limitations, we have subsequently repurposed C2Hear into an mHealth intervention (called m2Hear). The development of m2Hear was theoretically underpinned by the COM-B model and associated Theoretical Domains Framework to identify the specific components (or “active ingredients”) of the original RLOs that facilitate the target behaviour of hearing aid use. This resulted in the generation of 42 shorter mobile-enhanced RLOs (or mRLOs). Each mRLO was labelled with a specific user-centred question via concurrent Think Aloud interviews with hearing aid
users. An mHealth platform was then developed following an iterative, user-centred and participatory design approach, ensuring that it met the individual needs of the end user.
Overall, m2Hear provides opportunities for individualised learning and encourages greater interaction to facilitate self-management in first-time hearing aid users. | en_US |
